Avent BottlesFeeding with the Avent bottle is the next best thing to breastfeeding. The secret to its effectiveness is the patented Avent silicone nipple. The Avent nipple features a natural broad and soft design which allows baby to suckle at the breast using tongue and lips, similar to breastfeeding. During breastfeeding, baby latches on to the breast with a wide open mouth covering both the nipple and approximately 1 - 1˝" of the areolar tissue. The tongue is then brought forward over the lower gum to facilitate the suckling action on the breast. The Avent nipple’s broad shape encourages this same wide open mouth so baby actually latches on to the bottle, allowing suckling during bottle feeding. Since baby uses the same suckling motion on the Avent bottle as on the breast, transition between breast and bottle is easy. Standard bottles limit baby to a sucking motion using only their lips on the tip of the nipple, often leading to nipple confusion when returning to breastfeeding. Plus, the Avent nipple is long and more closely resembles the natural shape of the breast while feeding. The Avent nipple’s length and shape allows the correct positioning of the tip of the nipple in the back of baby’s mouth on the soft palate, just past the ridge of the hard palate. This elicits the natural swallowing process. Most standard bottles have shorter nipples which do not reach this area of the mouth. The Avent nipple is the only one featuring an anti-vacuum skirt with one-way air valve, which eliminates the vacuum that can build as baby drinks. When a vacuum forms the nipple collapses, constricting milk flow.
